Monnerat,Cecília Silva; Freitas,Marta Simone Mendonça; Vieira,Ivo José Curcino; Martins,Marco Antônio; Carvalho,Almy Junior Cordeiro de; Santos,Paulo Cesar dos; Lima,Thaísa Capato.
ABSTRACT Catharanthus roseus (L) G. Don (Madagascar periwinkle) belongs to the Apocynaceace family and is widely spread throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The plant produces several important alkaloids, such as ajmalicine and serpentine, which are used in the treatment of circulatory diseases. The potential of inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and nitrogen fertilization to enhance the production of alkaloids was investigated in periwinkle. A greenhouse experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and N fertilizer dosages on plant growth, production of ajmalicine, and nutrient content in roots. The concentration of ajmalicine was determined by reverse-phase high-performance...

Alkaloids in Solanum torvum Sw (Solanaceae): (With 2 Tables & 1 Figure) Phyton
Pérez-Amador,MC; Muñoz Ocotero,V; García Castañeda,JM; González Esquinca,AR.
A comparison was made between plants of Solanum torvum Sw that grow in Chiapas, Mexico, and plants of the same species originating from India. This was effected to establish either similarities or differences between these plants in total alkaloid contents and presence of solasodine, an important alkaloid for the partial synthesis of steroids. The total alkaloid content (0.12%) of the plants coming from Chiapas and India was the same. However, solasodine was found only in the plants of Chiapas. In addition, the total amount of glycoalkaloids (0.038%) and two glycosilated compounds derived from solasodine, solasonine (0.0043%) and solamargine (0.0028%), were determined.

ABSTRACT Salmonellosis is a globally important zoonosis, and Salmonella Heidelberg is one of the most prevalent serovars in poultry production worldwide, as well as in food poisoning cases. Antimicrobial drugs were previously widely used to face health challenges in animal production; however, since their ban as performance enhancers, many alternative strategies have been proposed. One of these strategies is the use of plant extracts, such as those containing the alkaloids benzophenanthridine and protopine. These compounds have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulation, and nutritional effects. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of the supply of a product containing benzophenanthridine and protopine (Sangrovit(r)WS 100...

Bufotenine is able to block rabies virus infection in BHK-21 cells J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Vigerelli,Hugo; Sciani,Juliana Mozer; Jared,Carlos; Antoniazzi,Marta Maria; Caporale,Graciane Maria Medeiros; Silva,Andréa de Cássia Rodrigues da; Pimenta,Daniel C.
Background Rabies is a fatal zoonotic neglected disease that occurs in more than 150 countries, and kills more than 55.000 people every year. It is caused by an enveloped single stranded RNA virus that affects the central nervous system, through an infection initiated by the muscular nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, according to many authors. Alkaloids, such as acetylcholine, are widespread molecules in nature. They are present in numerous biological fluids, including the skin secretion of many amphibians, in which they act (together with proteins, peptides and steroids) as protection agents against predators and/or microorganisms. Among those amphibians that are rich in alkaloids, there is the genus Rhinella. Methods Bufotenine was isolated from Rhinela...

Developmental Methylome of the Medicinal Plant Catharanthus roseus Unravels the Tissue-Specific Control of the Monoterpene Indole Alkaloid Pathway by DNA Methylation ArchiMer
Dugé De Bernonville, Thomas; Maury, Stéphane; Delaunay, Alain; Daviaud, Christian; Chaparro, Cristian; Tost, Jörg; O’connor, Sarah Ellen; Courdavault, Vincent.
Catharanthus roseus produces a wide spectrum of monoterpene indole alkaloids (MIAs). MIA biosynthesis requires a tightly coordinated pathway involving more than 30 enzymatic steps that are spatio-temporally and environmentally regulated so that some MIAs specifically accumulate in restricted plant parts. The first regulatory layer involves a complex network of transcription factors from the basic Helix Loop Helix (bHLH) or AP2 families. In the present manuscript, we investigated whether an additional epigenetic layer could control the organ-, developmental- and environmental-specificity of MIA accumulation. We used Whole-Genome Bisulfite Sequencing (WGBS) together with RNA-seq to identify differentially methylated and expressed genes among nine samples...

Differences in wing melanization and pigmentation pattern in Drosophila buzzatii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) under chemical stress Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Mongiardino Koch,Nicolás; Hasson,Esteban; Soto,Ignacio M..
Recently, the genetic basis and developmental mechanisms underlying the process of melanization have become progressively elucidated, allowing us to study the evolutionary processes that govern the huge variability of pigmentation observed in nature. However, environmental factors contributing to such variability have received little attention, even though they might have profound ecological consequences. Here we describe a method for analyzing the wing melanization patterns of drosophilids in both qualitative and quantitative ways. We test this method on wings of Drosophila buzzatii Patterson & Wheeler individuals, reared in control and alkaloid-enriched mediums. The alkaloids were extracted from the secondary host of these flies, Echinopsis...

Mortality of Plutella xylostella larvae treated with Aspidosperma pyrifolium ethanol extracts PAB
Trindade,Roseane Cristina Prédes; Silva,Paulo Pedro da; Araújo-Júnior,João Xavier de; Lima,Ivanildo Soares de; Paula,José Elias de; Sant'Ana,Antônio Euzébio Goulart.
The objective of this work was to assess the effects of Aspidosperma pyrifolium ethanol extracts on cabbage moth (Plutella xylostella) larvae. The ethanol extracts of the stem bark, fruits and roots of A. pyrifolium were obtained by classical phytochemical methods, and the resulting subfractions were tested on P. xylostella, using 4 and 5 mg L-1. The crude ethanol extract of the stem bark was more lethal. The alkaloid-rich aqueous subfraction derived from the stem bark extract caused 100% larval mortality at 4 mg L-1. Insecticidal activity was associated with the presence of the monoterpenoid indole alkaloids aspidofractinine, 15-demethoxypyrifoline, and N-formylaspidofractinine. These alkaloids presented excellent insecticidal properties against P....

Parazoanthines A-E: Hydantoin Alkaloids from the Mediterranean Sea Anemone Parazoanthus axinellae OceanDocs
Cachet, N.; Genta-Jouve, G.; Regalado, E.L.; Mokrini, R.; Amade, P.; Culioli, G.; Thomas, O.P..
Five new hydantoin alkaloids, named parazoanthines A-E (1-5), were isolated as the major constituents of the Mediterranean sea anemone Parazoanthus axinellae. Their structural elucidation was achieved through NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric analyses. The absolute configuration of the chiral compounds 1 and 4 was determined by comparison between experimental and TDDFT calculated CD spectra. The configuration of the trisubstituted double bond of 2, 3, and 5 was deduced from the 3JH6-C4 coupling constant value. This family of alkaloids represents the first example of natural 3,5- disubstituted hydantoins which do not exhibit a methyl at N-3. All compounds were tested for their natural toxicity (Microtox® assay) and parazoanthine C (3) exhibited the...

Oliveira,Alaíde B.; Dolabela,Maria Fâni; Braga,Fernão C.; Jácome,Rose L.R.P.; Varotti,Fernando P.; Póvoa,Marinete M..
Malaria remains one of the most serious world health problem and the major cause of mortality and morbidity in the endemic regions. Brazil is among the 30 high-burden countries and most of the cases occur in the Legal Amazonian Region. New chemotherapeutical agents are needed for the treatment of malaria. Many plant species are used in traditional medicines of malarious countries and a relatively few number of these have been investigated for evaluation of their antimalarial effect. Still lower is the number of those that have had the active natural compounds isolated and the toxicity determined. This area is, then, of great research interest. discovery project of antimalarial natural products from plants traditionally used to treat malaria must include in...
